Boots has reminded people aged 65 and over to do this one thing in the autumn.

Many people will opt to pay for a flu vaccine to help protect them from any new viruses throughout the autumn and winter.

Boots is now offering free NHS flu vaccinations to all eligible adults from vulnerable people to those aged 65 and over for 2026.

Boots extends its vaccination programme

The flu jabs at Boots have been available to those over the age of 65 since October 1.

People who fall into one of the groups of vulnerable people, like pregnant women and young children, have been able to get a jab since September 1.

If you are 65 or above, you can book an appointment to get a flu jab through the Boots website or talk to your local Boots pharmacist.

If you do not qualify for a free flu jab, you can still get one through the Boots Private Winter Flu Jab service.

Claire Nevinson, Superintendent Pharmacist at Boots, said: “Flu can make people feel very unwell and may pose a serious risk to those considered to be vulnerable.

“As we head into autumn, it's a good idea to plan ahead and ensure you have your flu jab as early as possible to help protect yourself and those around you from flu and reduce the risk of passing the virus to others this winter.”

The flu can be particularly dangerous for certain vulnerable people like the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Most people can get a flu vaccine, but the NHS says you cannot have a flu jab if you have had a serious allergic reaction to a previous dose of the vaccine or an ingredient used in the vaccine.

When should I get my flu jab?

You can still get the flu if you have a vaccine but it is likely to be milder and not last as long.

It is a good idea to get the flu vaccine in autumn as it usually takes up to 14 days to work.

You should get a flu vaccine every year, as protection from the vaccine goes down with time and the types of flu the jab protects you from are updated each year.
