Workers carrying out repairs to a gas main on the road between Accrington and Blackburn got more than they bargained for in July 2008.

While digging down to reach the main on Accrington Road at Intack they unearthed some of the original tram lines which were last in use in 1949.

Two sets of tracks set on granite blocks ran the length of the road into Blackburn.

The tram line to Church and Accrington started on the Boulevard in Blackburn opposite the Adelphi pub.

Many of the original tram lines remain under today’s roads as it was easier to bury them than have to cut through the thick steel rails to remove them.
