An East Lancashire man has denied beating a police officer and will go to trial next year.

Liam James, of Hall Street, Colne, appeared before Preston Crown Court charged with one count of assault by beating of an emergency worker.

The charges relate to an alleged incident on August 31, when the defendant is accused of assaulting Zachary Randles, who was an active police officer.

The 27-year-old denied the count, and a trial date has been set for February 3.

A pre-trial review has been set for December 7, and the defendant has been remanded into custody.
