A driver who shot red lights at a railway crossing as the barriers were being lowered risked his life or serious injury to avoid a short delay.

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard Aaron Holmes was traced by police after the former owner of his car provided his full details.

Holmes, 20, of Owen Street, Accrington, was convicted in his absence of failing to comply with automatic equipment at Huncoat level crossing in Enfield Road, Accrington, driving without insurance and without a valid licence.

He was fined £660 with £85 costs and a £264 victim surcharge.

Jade Roberts, prosecuting, said a Network Rail surveillance officer provided police with images of a car shooting the red lights at 7am on February 11.

The officer who investigated the incident said the barriers were in the process of being lowered in anticipation of an approaching train.

The officer said the behaviour presented a risk which could have resulted in death or serious injury.

The registered owner of the car was approached and confirmed he was not the owner of the vehicle at the time of the incident.

He provided Holmes' details to the police.

"At the time, the defendant was a provisional licence holder and was not insured," said Miss Roberts.
