A man guilty of possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornographic images failed to attend court.

Ben Phair, 29, of Haslingden Road, Blackburn, was due to be sentenced at Preston Crown Court on Friday (September 25).

Judge Darren Preston issued a warrant for Phair's arrest after being told the defendant had instead presented at the A&E department at Royal Blackburn Hospital for back pain.

Judge Preston said he "did not buy" Phair's explanation.

He said: "It would seem to me to be something of a miracle if he attended A&E at 1pm and managed to get an appointment for physiotherapy by 2.30pm.

"It seems to me he's given contradictory information to his solicitors, whether he's got an inability to walk or whether he's got back pain.

"Quite why he'd be referred to a physio for back pain if he couldn't walk is beyond me.

"I'm afraid I don't buy it, it seems wildly convenient to me."

A future date for sentence is yet to be set.
