The cheapest places to buy fuel in and around Blackburn

Petrol is now nearing 180p per litre in some parts of Blackburn, while diesel has already surpassed 200p at several stations, according to the latest figures from petrolprices.com.

The cheapest unleaded petrol in Blackburn is currently 169.9p at Esso’s Rangehill Filling Station.

Diesel users are seeing similar spikes.

The lowest price is 194.9p at Tesco Blackburn on Hill Street and Asda Blackburn Automat on Grimshaw Park.

Yet at Frontier Park Services on Whitebirk Roundabout, diesel costs a steep 203.9p per litre, with Preston Way Filling Station even higher at 207.9p.

Luke Bosdet, road fuel price spokesman for the AA, said: "Every 6p increase in the pump price of fuel includes an extra penny in VAT for the Treasury.

"Petrol currently averages around 172p a litre, with diesel above 196p.

"This time last year, they averaged 135p and 142p respectively.

"The extra 37p on petrol therefore includes a 6p-a-litre boost to VAT receipts, while diesel adds 9p a litre to the tax haul."

The AA is calling for an extension and increase to the current fuel duty cut, warning that small businesses and rural diesel users are under the most pressure.

Mr Bosdet said: "There would be a good argument for diesel getting further relief as it nears the July 2022 all-time record of 199.1p a litre.

"While many big businesses pass the extra cost of diesel onto their customers, often via a sliding scale of fuel surcharges, smaller businesses don’t automatically.

"These include taxi drivers, craftspeople, domestic repairs, vets, farriers, and many who rely on vehicles to look after their customers."

The Office for National Statistics will reveal the latest rate of UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation on Wednesday.

It is expected to reveal that inflation rose to 3.1 per cent in August, from 2.9 per cent a month earlier, according to a consensus of analysts compiled by Pantheon Macroeconomics.

It would point towards a continued upwards trajectory for inflation since reaching a 15-month low of 2.6 per cent in June.

Economists have suggested that the fresh figures are likely to show the early impact of the breakdown of the US-Iran ceasefire.

Oil and gas prices have ticked higher since the US-Iran ceasefire deal collapsed on July 8.

Oxford Economics’ Andrew Goodwin said he expects the data to show a significant uplift linked to higher petrol and diesel costs for motorists.

“Weekly data from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero suggests that fuel prices rose 7 per cent month-on-month between July and August, and we expect this to add around 0.2 percentage points to CPI inflation,” he said.

Airfares are also likely to have swung higher in August following weaker pricing in July, with higher jet fuel costs also feeding into ticket prices.
