The award-winning former artistic director of Bolton's Octagon, David Thacker, is behind a new production at Salford's Kings Arms.
The Red Lion looks at three key members of a grass roots amateur football club.
Written by Patrick Marber, the play takes the audience inside the changing room of a tiny non-league football club, where three people from three generations fight over talent, ambition and the club’s soul. will be performed at The Kings Arms, Salford, opening tomorrow night.
David, an Olivier Award-winning theatre and television director known for his highly acclaimed work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Young Vic, was artistic director at the Octagon from 2009 to 2015.
He said: “I’m delighted to be back at the Kings Arms Theatre in rehearsals for my fifth production here.
“We’re loving working on this beautiful play and we were privileged that Patrick Marber was able to join us in rehearsals a couple of days ago. It confirmed our belief that we are working on a very special play and we treasured his insights as we seek to bring his text to life."
David, who is also Professor of Theatre and Film at the University of Greater Manchester, added: “I hope that football fans and those who don’t like football or think theatre is not for them, will take the opportunity of seeing this funny, moving and very powerful play.”
