Blackburn Rovers will play a behind-closed-doors fixture during the upcoming international break as they balance recovery with training.

A three-week pause begins for the English Football League having been newly introduced this season.

The break at the start of September was scrapped in favour of an extended period later in the month. That means there will be one fewer stoppage, although the same length of time without club football.

Rovers, like many clubs, have lined up a game with another team to keep players match-ready and give game time to those who need it.

Mowbray will also use the time to focus on pattern of play, having bemoaned the inability to train during a busy last month of fixtures.

"We've got a couple of weeks to get some hard, serious work into the team because I can't sit here one week and moan that we just haven't done any training in three weeks," Mowbray admitted.

"Literally no training, literally watching videos, literally walking through things. Nobody's allowed to do any running.

"So we're going to have a three-week period now where we can do some running and some work and get the patterns that we want to play more cemented in the team.

"It's a positive but also it's a negative, the fact that we're losing four of the team and won't see them until a few days before the next game.

"There are good things and bad things about a three-week break. We will play another game in the middle of that, which is already in the diary.

"So just to keep everybody's legs going and make sure that three weeks isn't too long before the next game."

Rovers sit 16th in the Championship table, with the season still in its infancy. They have two wins and nine points to their name, having played a fair variety of opponents.

Mowbray believes there is plenty of room for improvement and will set about that on the training pitch.

That will be balanced with rest in the early part of the break, allowing players the time they need to rest and recover.

"Okay, lots of room for improvement and that will hopefully come," he said.

"We'll have three weeks now to get some training done, but obviously you can't with the lads who are going away on international duty, I think it's four of them, won't be involved.

"We now have plenty of days to train and try to pattern the team and find some consistency as we move forward.

"I think the players who have played seven and eight games in a 21-day period deserve a break, need a break, need three or four days to rest off their legs, get some massage, get some hot baths, chill out for a little bit."
