Scott Wharton has suffered a setback in training as the wait continues for his return to first-team action.

The Blackburn Rovers defender picked up a thigh injury at the start of pre-season but was due to play for the Under-21s against Crystal Palace on Saturday after a few weeks of training.

However, he picked up a niggle in Wednesday's training session and will now be reassessed.

Mowbray insists he's a player the club won't take any risks with, though wants to see him back competing for a starting place as soon as possible.

"The plan was he was going to travel with the Under-21s to play Crystal Palace on Saturday," Mowbray explained.

"He felt a little something in training yesterday and came off a little bit early, so we won't be sending him.

"If he's got any doubts or any slight strains, he won't be thrown into a football match.

"He was so close, as I said in training yesterday with the intention that he was going to go and play against Palace but if he's feeling something, then it's best that we get him 100% right in his mind that when he's ready to play, he'll be ready to play."

Wharton's suffered terrible luck with injuries throughout his career. Having returned from a serious knee issue last summer, an Achilles issue and muscle problems have prevented him from gaining much momentum.

"Obviously, since the day I came back he's practically done nothing. It was the first in-house game we had when he came off," Mowbray said.

"I remember seeing him on my first day back and it's obviously great, Scotty Wharton is one of the lads I've known for five and a half years and he told me he was a bit delicate; it had been a tough few years for him in and out and fit and then not fit.

"I don't want to speculate; he's a good lad, I like Scotty Wharton and what I would say is whenever I have seen clips of the team, he seems to be the guy getting his head on the ball in both boxes.

"He seemed to be the guy who was threatening to score at one end and always his head getting the first contact defensively. All we could do with him competing to get back in the team.

"Sean at the moment, has played every minute of every game. Whatever he is, Sean's a 30-year-old; it's a big ask to play seven games in 21 days.

"So just to have options is great for us and the sooner Scotty Wharton is available and ready to compete for a place on the team, the better."
