A man stabbed a woman five times in an attempt to kill her and sexually assaulted her as she lay seriously injured on the floor, a jury has heard.
Pawel Skros, 40, of Warwick Street, Church, denies attempted murder, wounding with intent, and sexual assault.
Opening the case at Preston Crown Court, prosecutor William Beardmore said the alleged offences took place on the morning of March 15.
Jurors were told the complainant encountered the defendant at an address in Church shortly after 9.30am.
The prosecution alleges the defendant prevented her from calling the police before producing a kitchen knife and stabbing her.

Mr Beardmore said the woman suffered several injuries, including a wound which penetrated her chest cavity and narrowly missed her heart.
The jury heard that after the attack, the complainant repeatedly begged for medical assistance, telling Skros she believed she was dying.
Skros, who the prosecution say is an alcoholic and was drunk at the time of the alleged offending, refused to seek help and instead subjected her to further distress while she lay injured, threatening to kill her and then himself, Mr Beardmore said.
It was further alleged that as she lay on the floor, Skros "French-kissed" the woman and rubbed her "intimate areas," something they say she said yes to but could not reasonably be considered consent under the circumstances.
Jurors heard the woman was eventually able to leave the property when Skros was distracted by a knock at the front door.

She escaped through a side door, it was heard, and ran to a nearby house, opening the front door and collapsing in the doorway.
The woman at that house and other neighbours nearby provided immediate assistance to stem the flow of blood before the emergency services arrived, the court heard.
Skros was arrested later that morning. The jury heard that while he was being booked in at the police station, he said: "I've done something, I know that, but it's because I cannot get help."
In a police interview, he denied attempting to kill or seriously harm the complainant.
He claimed she had been stabbed accidentally during a scuffle, and said she had made up the sexual assault allegation.
The trial continues.
