A remarkable photograph taken in East Lancashire appears to show a blue tit transformed into a flying fish.

Martin Goff spotted the bird swooping through the air while visiting Haslingden Grane.

He said: "I was at a local wildlife reserve, Haslingden Grane, on a wet day, but when the sun did shine the birds duly obliged too and came out to feed in the sunshine.

"This blue tit was captured just after taking off sideways from a tree. I did a double take after viewing the photo. Was it a bird or a flying fish I'd photographed?

"Its wings and tail spread wide to create the illusion of a small fish swimming through the air.

"The unusual perspective and perfectly timed moment gave it an almost underwater appearance."

The site is home to abundant wildlife, including deer, newts, bats, frogs and toads.
