Residents on a street in Edenfield have raised concerns over Lancashire County Council's plans for a 27-metre bus stop clearway outside their homes.

The council had originally intended to send letters to residents on Market Street explaining the proposal, but locals say this did not happen as planned.

The proposed bus stop would be based on a stretch of the street where a building with five flats is based, and residents there say this could lead to a loss of on-street car parking spaces for almost a dozen cars.

Pino Guarino, who lives on Market Street where the bus stop is proposed, said the council had not initially realised there were five flats within his building.

He told the Bury Times: "The council was supposed to send out letters in March about the planned bus stop, but failed to do so, which is why the consultation deadline has been extended to September 4.

"The council did not realise there were five flats in our building, which could mean up to 10 cars needing spaces used by tenants.

"Where are people going to park? We don't know where the council wants us to park because no alternative has been provided."

Northstone Homes has built a community car park around 100 metres from Market Street as part of a wider housing development.

However, Councillor Joanne Ash, who represents Rossendale South for Reform UK on the county council, said in a Facebook video discussing the planning application that access to the facility would be limited.

She said: "One concern about this community car park is that it would only be available to approved school staff and two Edenfield residents, with no further information provided.

"Residents and visitors would only be able to use the car park during evenings on school days, at weekends and during school holidays.

"Parking for up to two hours would be permitted for all users during evenings after school hours and at weekends."

A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said: "The bus stop and the stop opposite are being upgraded as part of wider improvements linked to nearby housing developments.

"To meet current safety and accessibility standards, a 27-metre bus stop clearway is required to allow buses to pull in safely and passengers to board and alight without obstruction.

"We recognise residents' concerns about parking, but the proposed clearway is the standard layout used across Lancashire and is the minimum length needed for safe bus operation."

The deadline for objections to the proposal is September 4, and a full decision will be made at a later date.
