The M6 southbound was closed for several hours this evening following a crash between a car and a van.
The incident happened on the motorway between J33 (Galgate) and J32 (M55) at rush hour. All lanes were closed as emergency services helped to clear the scene.
Drivers faced two hours of delays and seven miles of congestion on approach. There are still delays of less than an hour and three miles of congestion.
All lanes were reopened just before 9pm.
National Highways earlier said due to extensive diesel spillage the carriageway had to be resurfaced.
