A historic paddling pool is making a splash with families once again thanks to a £30,000 investment.
Children and parents across Burnley have been enjoying the paddling pool at Thompson Park throughout the school holidays.
It follows recent improvements funded through the UK Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund, allocating £30,000 to this park.
The pool, a long-standing summer favourite in the town, has benefited from resurfacing, repainting, and drainage upgrades, all designed to enhance the facility’s condition and longevity.
Councillor Martyn Hurt, Burnley Council’s executive member for health, leisure and culture, said: "It’s fantastic to see children and families enjoying the paddling pool again this summer.
"Thompson Park has a special place in the hearts of generations of Burnley residents and the paddling pool is one of those simple things that creates really happy childhood memories.
"This Pride in Place funding has allowed us to make practical improvements to a much-loved facility while protecting an important part of the park’s heritage for future generations."
The improvements are part of a wider £1.5 million programme of investment in Burnley through the Pride in Place Impact Fund.
The council is using the funding to upgrade community facilities, parks, and public spaces throughout the borough.
Councillor Hurt also praised the efforts of council staff.
He said: "I’d also like to thank our greenspaces staff, who work hard throughout the summer to keep Thompson Park and the paddling pool clean, safe, and welcoming."
The paddling pool has been part of Thompson Park since it first opened in 1930.
The park was established thanks to a £50,000 bequest from local businessman James Witham Thompson.
His vision led to the creation of the park’s boating lake, Italian gardens, tea rooms, and paddling pool.
Nearly a century later, the paddling pool remains a popular and distinctive feature, continuing to bring together generations of families in Burnley.
The recent improvements also support Burnley Council’s broader commitment to maintaining and enhancing parks and green spaces across the borough.
Thompson Park is one of six parks in the borough to receive a Green Flag Award in 2026, alongside Ightenhill Park, Padiham Memorial Park, Queen’s Park, Scott Park, and Towneley Park.
The paddling pool is open during warm and sunny weather, on weekends from April to September, and throughout the school holidays.
It remains a cherished part of Burnley’s heritage and a source of joy for families every summer.
