The Accrington Soapbox Challenge is set to return on the bank holiday weekend.
The free event will take place on Saturday, August 29, from 9am to 3.30pm in the town centre.
Crowds are expected to turn out in force to watch homemade carts speed down the course, which starts on Little Blackburn Road and ends with a sharp left turn onto Church Street.
This year’s challenge features a new film-themed format, a larger starting ramp, and a host of obstacles designed to test competitors’ creativity and courage.
Cllr Kate Walsh, portfolio holder for culture, heritage and arts at Hyndburn Borough Council, said: "The Soapbox is one of the best events in Accrington and, I would say, across the region.
"Thousands of people turn out, the racing and entertainment are fantastic and it’s a great opportunity to support our local businesses too.
"I can’t wait for this year’s event."
The course will include jumps, water blasters and twists and turns, with a brand new mega ramp built by Taylors Scaffolding to give competitors a fast start.
The event is organised by Scott Dawson Advertising and sponsored by Hyndburn Borough Council, Accrington & Rossendale College, Baxenden Car Breakers, Taylors Scaffolding and Financial Affairs.
Cllr Noordad Aziz, Mayor of Hyndburn, will be the first sitting mayor to compete in the challenge.
Cllr Aziz said: "I’m incredibly excited to be the first Mayor to compete in the Accrington Soapbox.
"Our cart is currently under construction in the Hyndburn Borough Council works department and I can’t wait to see the finished result.
"Make sure you come along and see it in action!"
MP for Hyndburn Sarah Smith will also return for her second year in the race.
Ms Smith said: "After our Wallace & Gromit cart last year, we’re back and determined to win Best Dressed Cart.
"We’re celebrating this year’s film theme with Jurassic Park, and we’re going all out to bring that trophy home."
The event begins at 9am when the pits open on Church Street, giving visitors the chance to view the carts up close before racing begins.
A parade of carts will take place at 10am, with racing set to start at 10.15am.
A 90-minute break at 12.30pm will allow spectators to explore the town and enjoy food and drink at nearby cafés and restaurants.
Entertainment during the day will include live music from James G, dance performances from the Helen Green Academy of Dance, and appearances by roaming ska band Blowjangles and a dancing Chinese lion.
Racing will resume at 2pm, with awards presented from 3pm.
Funfair rides will be available for children, and market cabins near the finish line will be decorated for the occasion and open throughout the day.
