Demolition is under way at the entrance canopy of Pendle Rise shopping centre.

This marks the beginning of a project to clear the entire site as part of a major regeneration scheme in Nelson town centre.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, leader of Pendle Council and a member of the Nelson Town Deal board, said: "This is great news to finally see the work starting.

"Once the canopy has been removed, it will be all systems go and we will start to see the shopping centre disappear to make way for a brand new retail development."

Demolition of the main building is expected to begin in the middle of next month.

The scheme, supported by Government funding through the Nelson Town Deal, will deliver a modern retail complex, parking for over 150 cars and landscaped outdoor areas.

It will be delivered by Penbrook, a partnership between Pendle Borough Council and Brookhouse, a leading expert in retail centre developments.

Stephen Barnes, chair of the Nelson Town Deal, said: "We are getting closer to fulfilling our vision of providing the residents of Nelson and visitors to the town with a new and exciting shopping and leisure time experience."
