Police uncovered a large cannabis farm at a property in Accrington.

Officers were called to a premises in Church Street at around 10am today (July 22).

Inside, they discovered a "sophisticated" set-up with 221 cannabis plants at various stages of growth, spanning four separate rooms.

A 36-year-old man from Albania has been arrested in connection with the police investigation and remains in custody.

A police spokesperson said: "You may have seen some police activity in Accrington today.

"We were called to a commercial premises on Church Street in Accrington around 10am.

"We found a sophisticated cannabis grow consisting of 221 plants in various stages of growth, which was spread over four rooms in the property, with associated heating and lighting equipment.

"Officers across Lancashire regularly dismantle, bag and destroy cannabis grows."

Police say commercial-scale cannabis operations are often linked to wider criminal networks.

The spokesperson said: "Often behind a cannabis grow is an organised crime gang, who are actively exploiting the vulnerable (including children) for their own financial gain.

"Many of these people have often been trafficked from other countries with the promise of a better life; many live in squalor, and many are subjected to violence and abuse.

"In addition, grows of this size (and as is the case with this particular set up) can make properties unsafe through faulty electrics, often putting the whole street in danger.

"A huge cost to the owner and a huge emotional cost to the families and neighbours."
