Completed in 1822, Pyebrook Hall was commissioned by Charlotte Bamford, who acquired her wealth from the local Kershaw family of Heskin Hall following a long inheritance dispute - and Lancashire Life Magazine has taken a deep-dive into the property, which is now on the market.

The property was deliberately positioned to face Heskin Hall and it is said that Charlotte would stand upon the Portico balcony in an act of defiance.

This enduring spirit of strength and individuality still defines the property today, beginning with the sweeping gravel driveway providing a strong sense of arrival.

This winds gracefully through mature grounds before revealing the distinguished façade, completed with an elegant, columned porch.

Inside, the hallway opens up with high ceilings, original servant bells and a sweeping staircase that immediately draws the eye.

"The Regency staircase is a particularly favourite feature of the house; it provides a grand entrance through the front door and up to the galleried landing," the owner says.

Since purchasing the property at auction in 2014, the current owners have carefully restored it, always mindful of its heritage.

Original features have been preserved wherever possible, from stone floors and fireplaces to beams and latched doors, giving the house a strong sense of authenticity.

"The previous owner of the house had been resident for 60 years with little work carried out, it was therefore in need of a lot of TLC," the owners say.

"The basics were all there but it needed bringing back to life."

The living spaces strike an easy balance between elegance and comfort as each room comes into its own at different times of the day.

"Breakfast in the morning room with first light from the east is an enlightening experience. Cosy evenings in the cottage parlour with a roaring fire are reminiscent of times past."

At the heart of it all is the kitchen, a space that feels both timeless and lived-in. Shaker-style cabinetry, marble worktops and an Aga give it that classic country feel, while the island becomes the natural place for everyone to gather.

Beyond, the house reveals more of its past. The old workers’ cottage, now part of the main home, brings a more rustic feel, with stone floors, exposed beams and a cast iron bread oven forming a real focal point.

Upstairs, four bedrooms offer space and comfort in equal measure, each with views stretching out across the surrounding fields.

The principal suite combines period charm with a more luxurious feel, complete with a roll-top bath and walk-in shower.

"Whichever bedroom you awake from, the vista across the open fields is a spectacular way to start the day," the owner says.

Outside, Pyebrook Hall really comes into its own. S et within around 4.5 acres, the grounds unfold into a series of spaces that feel both beautifully designed and effortlessly natural.

From formal gardens to productive plots, and a wildlife pond that draws in everything from dragonflies to deer, there’s a sense that the landscape is constantly alive.

For those looking for even more space, a further eight acres of adjoining land are available by separate negotiation, offering additional scope for equestrian use, extended grounds or simply more room to enjoy the setting.

The west garden, with its cobbled detailing and walled sections, feels sheltered and structured, while the south-facing cottage garden is full of character, with fruit and vegetable beds set against wide, open countryside views.

It’s also a house that lends itself naturally to hosting. From relaxed summer afternoons outdoors to larger celebrations, the space works effortlessly.

The owners have even hosted a wedding here, with a marquee on the lawn and more than 100 guests enjoying the setting.

"Pyebrook Hall provided a charmingly romantic backdrop and facilities for this very happy family occasion," they reminisce.

There’s also a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Wildlife moves freely through the grounds, and the changing seasons bring constant variety in colour and atmosphere.

Despite its setting, Pyebrook Hall is far from isolated. The village of Heskin offers a strong sense of community, with a local shop, post office, school and Heskin Hall itself just a short distance away for cafés and independent shopping.

The motorway network is also within easy reach, connecting easily to the wider North West.

Pyebrook Hall is more than just a period property. It’s a home with a story, a setting and a warmth that’s hard to replicate, somewhere that feels as special today as it did two centuries ago.
