Search the Public Notice PortalKirkham Baths has taken another step towards its long-awaited redevelopment, with early preparatory works now completed as part of a major investment in swimming facilities across Fylde.
The progress follows Fylde Council's approval of a £9.3 million investment in swimming provision in St Annes and Kirkham, described as the largest leisure investment in the authority's history.
Earlier this year, local firm Warden Construction Ltd carried out a programme of enabling works at the historic baths.
The project included the installation of internal scaffolding, specialist asbestos removal and the stripping out of fixtures and fittings throughout the building.
The works also gave specialists access to inspect the roof structure and uncover historic features within the building.
A Fylde Council spokesperson said: "Kirkham Baths is moving steadily towards its transformation and we're delighted to see real progress being made on this much-loved community facility.
"These early enabling works are a crucial foundation for the full restoration ahead.
"Our aim is to create a modern, fully compliant leisure facility while protecting the historic character that makes Kirkham Baths such an important part of the town's identity."
Council officials said the initial phase was completed safely, on schedule and within budget, paving the way for the next stage of the restoration project.
Places Leisure, part of social enterprise Places for People, has now assembled a team of specialist designers to develop plans for the new-look facility.
The aim is to create a modern swimming and leisure centre while preserving the historic character of the building.
Proposals include a refurbished swimming pool, upgraded gym facilities and modern changing areas, alongside improvements to ensure the site meets current safety and accessibility requirements.
The project will now move into a detailed design phase, with further surveys, consultation and planning work expected over the coming months.
Given the age and condition of the building, council leaders have stressed that the redevelopment is complex and must be carried out carefully to protect the baths' historic fabric while delivering a modern leisure facility.

Current plans anticipate main construction work beginning next year, with the redeveloped baths expected to open to the public in 2028.
As the scheme progresses, the council says it will share new images and updates so residents can follow the transformation.
The Kirkham Baths redevelopment forms part of wider efforts to secure the long-term future of swimming provision across Fylde and provide modern leisure facilities for residents in Kirkham and surrounding rural communities.
