Pair jailed for attempted robbery with imitation gun in Brierfield

The incident took place in Brierfield at around 2pm on February 23.

Muhammad Danish and Malik Khan, both 20 and from Brierfield, approached the 19-year-old victim on Walter Street and demanded money.

Danish pulled out a black imitation handgun, prompting the teenager to flee in fear for his life.

He ran towards Townley Street, but tripped and fell.

The men caught up with him, kicked him several times, and repeated their demands, saying: "Take your phone out, empty your account."

The attack ended only when a member of the public intervened.

Metal ball bearings were found at the scene on Townley Street, and more ball bearings and an empty packet were later discovered at Khan’s home.

Similar items were found at Danish’s address, along with a coat matching one worn by Khan during the attack.

Danish, of Walter Street, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.

He was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

Khan, of Albert Street, admitted to assault causing actual bodily harm and possession of an imitation firearm.

He was jailed for three years and two months.

Both men were made subject to a 10-year restraining order preventing contact with the victim.

Detective Constable Louise Hanns of Burnley CID said: "This was a concerning offence where a young man was threatened with an imitation handgun on a residential street.

"These two men were prepared to brandish a weapon and attack their victim, with no concern for members of the public going about their daily business.

"The carrying of firearms, whether imitation or capable of being fired, will not be tolerated by Lancashire Police and we will investigate such reports thoroughly in a bid to bring offenders to justice."
