Blackpool Zoo has provided a heartwarming update on one of its youngest residents, three-year-old orangutan Jarang, highlighting his steady development despite a challenging start to life.
In a statement, the zoo said: "As Jarang recently turned three years old, we thought we’d take a moment to share an update on his ongoing progress."
Jarang has faced a number of health and developmental hurdles since birth.
Keepers revealed he was born with developmental delays as well as a bilateral scrotal hernia, which was "successfully operated on in 2024."
Despite this, staff say his progress has been positive.
They added: "With the continued care and expertise of our primate and veterinary teams, we’re really pleased with the steady and encouraging progress he is making."
As his strength and coordination have improved, Jarang has grown in confidence within his habitat, with his "gentle nature and curiosity really beginning to shine."
He is now spending more time moving around and engaging with enrichment activities designed to support his development.
The zoo explained that keepers have introduced features such as low-level climbing nets and swinging ropes" to help him build his climbing skills at a pace suited to his needs.
Jarang’s care plan also includes tailored nutrition.
He continues to feed from his mother, Jingga, while gradually being introduced to small amounts of solid food.
The zoo said this is "complementing the feeds he still receives from his mum, Jingga, with small amounts of solid food also included in his diet."
Although he shares a close bond with Jingga, Jarang has formed a particularly touching relationship with another orangutan, Cherie.

Keepers said: "He can often be seen seeking her out for cuddles, finding additional comfort in her calm and nurturing presence."
Zoo staff described how each young orangutan develops differently, adding: "Just like humans, all young orangutans develop at their own pace, and we’re incredibly proud of the progress Jarang continues to make despite the challenges he has faced."
They added that they are looking forward to watching him continue to grow in the years ahead.
