Wickes has entered plans to convert the site of Matalan in Colne.

The DIY and trade retailer submitted the application to Pendle Council, which aims to remove the existing canopy entrance and install a covered trolley park.

It additionally wants to replace the side elevation entrance with double steel swing doors and introduce a roller shutter goods entrance, as well as the erection of a mesh fence in the service yard.

At this time, only the site and elevation plans have been submitted, as well as illustrations for the proposed covered trolley park, but no statement is currently available.

In March, Wickes unveiled plans to accelerate new store openings as part of aims to expand its network to 300 sites nationwide, creating more than 2,000 jobs.

The retailer, which currently has a 230-strong estate, said it is aiming to open four to five stores this year, before ramping up the opening programme to at least 10 a year from 2028.

The plans were revealed in full-year results showing underlying pre-tax profits rose 14.4 per cent to £49.9 million for the year to December 27 as sales rose 5.9 per cent, helping offset rising cost pressures.

David Wood, chief executive of Wickes, said: "Given the strength of investment returns from our proven store refit and new store rollout strategy, we have today announced the decision to accelerate our investment for future growth.

"This takes our ambition to reach 300 stores nationwide – creating over 2,000 new jobs as we bring Wickes’ distinctive offer to new locations up and down the UK."

The Matalan store, in North Valley Retail Park, shut its doors on March 7, with the branch working to support colleagues and relocate staff members to other positions "where possible".

Matalan, a UK retailer founded in 1985, sells clothing and homeware across hundreds of locations and through its online platform.

A spokesperson for the company said at the time: "Our store at North Valley Retail Park will close in March.

"Our priority now is to support our colleagues.

"We are working closely with all those affected and, where possible, exploring alternative positions.

"We have thoroughly enjoyed serving customers at the retail park and hope they will continue to shop with us at our nearby Accrington or Blackburn stores."
