A man rang police saying someone was trying to kill him and made mention of a gun.

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard that when police arrived, they viewed CCTV footage and ended up arresting Mohammed Khelya.

Khelya, 33, of Royshaw Avenue, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting his mother.

He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and £26 victim surcharge.

Glenn Anderton, prosecuting, said Khelya had been caught on the CCTV footage making the call to the police.

"He was also seen on the footage dragging his mother by the arm, and she clearly didn't want to be dragged," said Mr Anderton.

"She tried to stop that by hanging on to a telegraph pole."

Mr Anderton said when police arrived it was clear there had been some kind of family incident.

"They were not prepared to make a complaint, but due to the footage the police were able to prove the charge," said Mr Anderton.

When he was interviewed, Khelya said he was suffering from paranoia.

"He said he was trying to get his mum away from the house," said Mr Anderton.

"When he was shown the footage he said he didn't intend to cause her any harm.

"The family have been spoken to, and they just want him to get some help with his mental health."

Gareth Price, mitigating, said his client's mother had confirmed there had been no previous violence against her and she didn't want him to appear before the court.

"He has had three nights in a police cell in which to reflect on his behaviour," said Mr Price.

He said Khelya had become convinced there was someone in the house "hellbent" on causing him harm.

"He rang the police, believing he was going to be attacked," said Mr Price.

"The action to remove his mother from the house was to protect her.

"She knew there was no one in the house, and she was reluctant to leave."

Mr Price said his client had been given a list of agencies that he could approach for help with his issues.
