Blackpool Transport has announced that dogs will be allowed to travel for free on all of its buses and trams from today, Monday June 1, in a move aimed at making public transport more accessible for pet owners.
The long-standing £1 "Rover" fare for canine companions has been scrapped following customer feedback suggesting the charge may have discouraged some passengers from using the network.
Jamie Swift, head of commercial at Blackpool Transport, said the change builds on the company’s history of welcoming dogs on board.
"The 'Rover' ticket has been a long tradition here in Blackpool and dates back to well before dogs were allowed on many other networks in the UK," he said.

"However, after listening to feedback from customers, we believe that charging for pampered pooches may actually put some people off using our services.
"As we want our trams and buses to provide the 'paw-fect' way to travel for everyone, this nominal fee has found itself in the dog house and been consigned to history."
While the move means dogs can now travel at no extra cost, passengers are reminded that pets must be well behaved and kept under control at all times.
Owners are also expected to be considerate of other passengers and to clean up after their animals if needed.
And although four-legged travellers may now ride for free, Blackpool Transport has stressed that human passengers must still hold a valid ticket for their journey.
