Three arrested after protest and counter-protest in Blackpool

Three people were arrested during protests in Blackpool on Saturday.

The Blackpool: No justice, No peace demonstration was organised by the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and began around midday along the promenade. There was also a counter protest.

A 42-year-old man from Blackpool was arrested on suspicion of police assault, and an 18-year-old man from Blackpool and an a 32-year-old man from Blackpool were arrested on suspicion of causing harassment/alarm/distress.

A police spokesperson said: "As many of you will be aware, there was a protest and counter-protest in Blackpool today.

"The majority of those in attendance exercised their right to protest in a lawful manner.

"However, unfortunately three people engaged in behaviour which led to their arrest.

"A 42-year-old man from Blackpool was arrested on suspicion of police assault, and an 18-year-old man from Blackpool and an a 32-year-old man from Blackpool were arrested under Section 5 of the Public Order Act – causing harassment/alarm/distress.

"We’d just like to thank the residents and business owners of Blackpool for their patience and understanding throughout the day."
