A feral cat who once had “0 trust” in humans is now recovering after a life-threatening emergency thanks to quick action from vets and the people who refused to give up on him.
Scruffy, who has been cared for by local residents and Happy Cats Hyndburn Rescue, was rushed to emergency vets after suffering severe bleeding linked to an injury in a sensitive area common in older male cats.
Violetta Ponomarenko-Cattam, Scruffy's foster carer, explained that vets believe the area may have been caught or nicked, causing significant blood loss due to the number of arteries.

Emergency treatment focused on stabilising the bleeding, with surgery initially a possibility.
Thankfully, Scruffy responded well to treatment and surgery was avoided.
In an update, the rescue shared: “Viola has just collected Scruffy from the emergency vets, they managed to stabilise the bleed without surgery. He needs all your healing vibes and positive thoughts to ensure it stays this way now.”
Scruffy is now back home with Violetta and beginning his recovery.
The rescue added: “Thank you to everyone for your well wishes, Scruffy is now back home with his foster mama and enjoying a little fuss. The emergency vet’s did great with him and kept him stable and avoided surgery, so fingers crossed he’s finally on the right track to recovery.”
His journey hasn’t been easy.
Scruffy first appeared in the area around a year ago, only visiting at night and completely feral.

Violetta said: “Scruffy appeared in our area about a year ago, but only comes at night time and has been feral (0 trust). You couldn’t come close to him.”
Over time, with patience and regular feeding, he began to trust people more, eventually allowing closer contact.
Despite concerns about his health, including sneezing and breathing issues, no owner could be found after he was scanned for a microchip.
Now, after his latest scare, supporters are being thanked for helping cover his vet bills.
