Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has weighed in on Leicester City’s appeal and how it could affect the Championship relegation battle.
In February, the Foxes were docked six points by the EFL for breaching financial rules. Gary Rowett’s side currently sit in the bottom three.
The club appealed against the points deduction and the outcome has not yet been revealed.
The Premier League also lodged an appeal, arguing that further sanctions should have been imposed for late submission of the annual accounts.
A statement at the time said the Premier League would be “seeking to have the appeal resolved urgently, and in any event before the end of the EFL season”.
With the relegation battle set to go down to the wire, and a handful of clubs still in danger, the potential outcome of the appeal has caused uncertainty.
Maguire insists that the decision must be made “very quickly” to ensure the fairest conditions during the run-in.
"That is a real risk and I think whatever is going to happen, a decision has to be made very, very quickly because it's not fair on all of the teams towards the bottom of the division," he told BBC Radio Oxford.
"Managers need to know before a match, fan needs to know before a match, do we need a win, do we need a draw? And that affects the strategy, the preparation, the team selection, that affects everything.
"I think both the EFL and Leicester City need to get this appeal sorted sooner rather than later."
Rovers welcome Leicester to Ewood Park on the final day of the season and it could have huge ramifications on the relegation picture.
The Foxes picked up four points from their last three games before the international break, including a win against Bristol City, as they aim to climb out of the drop zone.
Rowett’s side have a double header against Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday over the Easter weekend.
