Poulton-le-Fylde woman’s surprise in Capital radio proposal

Sophie Black, 33, from Poulton-le-Fylde, was unsuspectingly at the heart of it all when her boyfriend, Darren Spencer, 32, proposed to her live on Capital Breakfast with the help of radio hosts Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby.

Ms Black, who works in administration, believed she was in London for a competition-winning overnight stay at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel, but the real reason was a carefully planned Valentine’s Day proposal broadcast across the UK.

Mr Spencer, a Senior Leader of Education, had been secretly working with Capital’s producers to bring the plan to life.

For two weeks, the radio show had been teasing listeners with clues about their hidden “Secret Fiancé,” while Ms Black listened in each morning during her commute, unaware it was all about her.

The proposal unfolded over breakfast at the hotel, where a flash-mob-style choir began singing before Ms Black’s favourite artist, Tom Grennan, entered the room.

Mr Grennan performed Little Bit of Love before Mr Spencer got down on one knee.

Mr Spencer said: "Sophie, ever since I’ve met you you have brightened up my world in every single way. I couldn’t think of anybody I’d rather spend the rest of my life with. Will you please marry me."

Ms Black, overcome with emotion, said 'yes' through tears.

Cheers erupted from the Capital Breakfast team, listeners, and even Grennan himself, who performed for the couple.

Back in the Capital studio after the proposal, Mr North asked Ms Black how she was feeling.

Ms Black said: "I’m just so shocked.

"Never in a million years did I think he [Darren] could pull something off like that or that it would even happen to me."

Mr North pressed further, asking whether she’d suspected anything, given that she’d been listening to the clues every day on her way to work.

Ms Black said: "No, not at all.

"I just would never have even thought that he would do something like that."

Following Ms Black's emotional acceptance, Ms Welby assured her that she had been “so brave,” and explained that her fiancé was Capital’s Secret Fiancé.

Ms Black said: "Overwhelmed, I just can’t believe it.

"Thank you so much.

"I just don’t know what to say."

Mr Grennan congratulated the couple, giving Ms Black flowers and a hug.

Mr Spencer thanked the entire Capital team.

He said: "Honestly, I’ve got no words to thank you guys enough.

"And that’s every single one of you.

"What a magical radio station.

"Thank you very much."
