Two long-serving East Lancashire councillors – one Conservative and one Labour - are to be given the freedom of their borough.
Former Hyndburn Council leader Cllr Marlene Haworth and the authority’s planning chair Cllr Dave Parkins will be given its highest civic honour at the March Full Council meeting.
It comes as both councillors are currently receiving treatment for serious health conditions.
Conservative Cllr Marlene Haworth has represented St. Oswald's Ward in Oswaldtwistle for 19 years and held several senior roles, including as Leader of the Opposition, Deputy Leader of the Council and as Leader of the Council from 2023 to 2024.
She also served as the Mayor of Hyndburn in 2015/16 and was made an Honorary Alderman in 2017.
Cllr Haworth is currently recovering from cancer surgery after having a tumour removed.
Labour’s Cllr Dave Parkins has more than 27 years of service on Hyndburn Council.
First elected in 1994, he represented the Huncoat ward for two decades and served as Mayor of Hyndburn in 2001/02, becoming an Honorary Alderman in 2006.
Cllr Parkins is due to see a specialist at Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital after a recent cancer diagnosis.
Cllr Haworth said: “I’d like to thank everyone for the kind words and wishes I’ve received. It’s been very humbling to see that so many people care.
“ When I reflect back on my 19 years as a Councillor, I hope people know what a privilege it has been to represent the residents of Oswaldtwistle and of Hyndburn.”
“To be considered for the Freedom of the Borough is an immense honour and I look forward to getting back into the Council Chamber soon!”
Cllr Parkins said: “To receive such an honour from the borough I’ve served for so many years is overwhelming.
“My focus has always been on doing the best I can for local people, and I am grateful to colleagues for their support during what has been a challenging time personally.”
Hyndburn Council leader, Labour's Cllr Munsif Dad, said: “Marlene and Dave have each devoted many years of service to the residents of Hyndburn.
"Their service and commitment make them deserving of the Freedom of the Borough.”
Conservative opposition group leader Cllr Zak Khan added: “This honour reflects not only the length of their service but the quality of it.
"Marlene and Dave have worked tirelessly for residents. We are proud to support this recognition.”
