Police said a teenager driving at “excess speed” had “lost control” before a crash which killed four people.
The crash happened on Wigan Road in Deane on Sunday, January 11, when a red Seat Leon crashed with a Citroen C4 Picasso shortly before one am.
An inquest into the deaths of the Seat’s driver, Mohammed Jibrael Mukhtar, 18, and his two passengers, Mohammad-Danyaal Ashgar-Ali, 19, and Farhan Imtiyaz Patel, 18, was formally opened at Bolton Coroner’s Court.

A separate inquest was also opened into Masrob Ali’s death – the driver of the Citroen - from Blackburn.
District Coroner Michael Pemberton began by saying: “This is a case which has attracted a lot of media attention.”
He asked the police coroner’s officer, Julieann Hyde, to confirm the details of their deaths.

Mr Pemberton said a “motor vehicle was being driven at excess speed along Wigan Road in Bolton” when “the vehicle lost control and crossed into the opposing carriageway”.
The car then collided with a “motor vehicle” travelling in the “opposite direction” leading three of the Seat’s passengers, and the driver of the Citroen, to suffer “injuries which led to their death”.
PCO Hyde said that Jibrael had been an apprentice electrical engineer, Mohammad-Danyaal was a retail assistant and Farhan, from Deane, had been a student.
Officers identified Jibrael, from Bolton, "based on photographic evidence from his driving license" and Mohammad-Danyaal, who was born in Blackburn but lived in Bolton, was identified by his mother and Farhan by his uncle.
'Police investigations are ongoing'
PCO Hyde gave the cause of death for the two passengers to be multiple traumatic injuries and Jibrael’s to be blunt head and chest injuries.
Masrob’s cause of death was also given as multiple traumatic injuries and PCO Hyde said the 54-year-old was a warehouse operative.
Mr Pemberton noted that “police investigations are ongoing” and he will review the cases in five months' time.
He expressed his condolences to the families.
