A 50p thought to be one of the rarest coins in the UK has been listed on eBay for more than £2,000, and it's already in someone's basket.
Rare coins often earn far more than their face value online, with the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p widely regarded as the most coveted 50p in circulation.
One seller is currently offering a circulated Kew Gardens 50p for £2,046.70, but don't worry, the postage cost to Blackburn from Reading is free.
The listing has renewed interest in the coin’s rarity and value among collectors.
The description on the listing reads:
“This Kew Gardens 50p coin from 2009 is a must-have for any serious coin collector. It features a beautiful design depicting the iconic Kew Gardens, and is a genuine coin made in the United Kingdom. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to add this absolutely beautiful and rare piece to your collection. The denomination of this coin is 50p and it was manufactured in England. It is a part of the Decimal Coinage series and falls under the category of British coins.”
Mark Loveridge, director of UK currency at the Royal Mint, said:
“The coinage of Queen Elizabeth II spanned 70 years and special designs issued into circulation celebrated some of the biggest events in history.”
The coin’s design, created by Christopher Le Brun RA, features the famous Chinese Pagoda at Kew Gardens wrapped in a decorative leafy climber.
With a diameter of 27.5mm, the 50p remains the largest British coin by shape, allowing space for commemorative artwork.
Just 210,000 of the 2009 Kew Gardens coins were released into circulation, an exceptionally low mintage.
With most now in private collections, the chances of finding one in everyday change are slim, which is why collectors continue to pay such high prices for the rare find.
