An East Lancashire nursery providing a “distinctive learning environment” has been graded as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.
Smartypants Exclusive Childcare, in Hibson Road, Nelson, was visited on August 19 and achieved an ‘outstanding’ across all examination areas.
Ofsted noted that staff knew the children “exceptionally well”, and they have designed a curriculum that is ambitious, flexible and responsive to children’s changing needs.
Inspectors said: “This nursery provides a distinctive learning environment, where staff recognise every child is unique.
“Staff are highly reflective, continually learning from children and adapting plans to build on their ideas and experiences. This personalised approach ensures that all children make excellent progress from their starting points in development.
“Children who have gaps in their development receive highly effective support to help them catch up rapidly.”
The personal development of children was a “particular strength”, and staff support children to recognise and manage their emotions and reflect on how their behaviour affects others.
Children were seen to confidently make choices, use their imagination and persist with tasks until they succeed.
Inspectors added: “The nursery places children's well-being at the heart of its planning. Staff weave themes, such as feelings, family life, celebrations and achievements, through daily practice.
“They skilfully use birthdays, reward ceremonies and routines around behaviour and turn-taking to build children's self-esteem and social skills.”
A language-rich environment that promotes children’s communication skills was praised, and staff were seen to ask effective questions to allow children time to think and reply.
Children who speak English as an additional language also receive highly effective support.

Children who have recently turned three were seen to show impressive skills and independence, and they looked to their peers for support, which was put down to a strong focus on cooperation.
The nursery also has “exceptionally strong” links with local schools, which significantly ease children’s transition.
Inspectors added: “Reception class teachers visit to share guidance on what children need to know before starting school.
“Where no direct links exist, staff research the school and teachers, providing children with photos to prompt discussion. Therefore, children move on to school with confidence and familiarity.”
Leadership was deemed to be highly effective, and a committed management team is ambitious with a clear vision for excellence.
