A councillor is calling for safety measures on a road in Colne after a fatal crash on Thursday (September 18).

A woman, in her 60s, died on Thursday after a crash involving a white DAF truck on North Valley Road.

The man who was arrested has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Colne town council vice chair, Anthony Chamberlain, said he was on the road at the time of the accident but did not witness the crash.

He said he “feels that speeding is an issue” on the road and feels that a “speed camera would be beneficial to improve road safety”.

He said: “I was on North Valley Rd yesterday at the time of the accident, but I didn't witness the event.

“We will be passing on CCTV footage to the police to aid in their investigation.

“I would like to offer my deepest condolences to her friends and relatives. I would also like to say thank you to the emergency services who responded rapidly to the accident.

“I feel that speeding is an issue on North Valley Road, and I feel that a speed camera would be beneficial to improve road safety.

“As a council we take road safety incredibly seriously and have increased the use of speed indicator devices (SPIDs) in Colne, so that we can share the data we obtain with the Police to help make our roads safer.

“We will be passing on CCTV footage to the police to aid in their investigation.”

At 10.44am on Thursday, police received a report of a crash involving a white DAF truck and a pedestrian on North Valley Road.

The pedestrian, a woman in her 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of writing, she has not been named.

Yesterday, police confirmed that a 65-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

In an update issued today (September 19), police said the man who was arrested has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Enquiries are ongoing to determine exactly what has happened in the crash and police are appealing for information and footage.
