The A56 northbound has reopened following a car fire yesterday evening (September 16).

National Highways confirmed the road was open again shortly before 5am today (September 17).

The road was closed between the M66 at Edenfield and the A682 at New Hall Hey for emergency resurfacing works following the fire.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 6.30pm yesterday after a car burst into flames on the carriageway.

Traffic stretched back to Bury as drivers faced huge delays heading north into Lancashire.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The A56 in Lancashire has reopened northbound between the M66 Edenfield and the A682 New Hall Hey following completed emergency resurfacing works.

"Thank you for your patience, please have a safe onward journey."
