Search the Public Notice PortalBlackburn billionaire businessman Zuber Issa has pledged his personal and his company EG On The Move’s commitment to the town.
The promise comes after the EG Group, founded 24 years ago by him and his brother Mohsin, announced its intention to move its headquarters to the USA, and UK operations to Bolton.
Zuber departed as co-chief executive 15 months ago, and Mohsin also stepped down earlier this year.
Zuber said his business would remain at the Waterside headquarters building with 300 staff there.
The EG Group announced last week its HQ would be moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, with the hub for its remaining UK operations relocating to Bolton.
Since it opened in 2020, it has been home to up to 700 staff working for EG Group, EG On The Move and other Issa brother companies, plus their charitable foundation.
In October 2024, Zuber stepped down and founded his own UK petrol forecourt and convenience retail business, including food service, branded ‘EG on the Move’ as a separate business entity from EG Group.
In January, he bought the EG Group's remaining UK forecourt business and some food service sites for £228 million.
In April, Mohsin stepped down as co-chief executive of EG group, handing the reins to New York-based Russ Colaco, though both brothers retain seats on the board.
The Lancashire Telegraph understands that if Zuber’s company continues to grow – as evidenced by its February purchase of Applegreen UK’s 98 sites and 40 foodservice concessions to bring its total number of petrol forecourts nationally to 151 – it will seek to take more Blackburn office space for extra staff.
Monte Blackburn Ltd – the brothers’ property business – is then likely to seek new tenants for any vacant offices.
A spokesman for Zuber Issa, chief executive of EG On The Move, said: “Being based in Blackburn with Darwen has always been pivotal to our enterprise journey and will continue to do so today for our various business interests.
“While operational changes are being made at EG Group and they have decided to relocate, EG On The Move is actively growing its site network and presence, and its management and operations will continue to be firmly rooted at our Waterside offices on Haslingden Road, Blackburn.
“Our connection to the community, our people, and the local economy remains as strong as ever.”
Blackburn with Darwen Council leader Cllr Phil Riley said: “For more than two decades, EG Group has grown from its Blackburn roots into a global success story.
“That journey is something we are incredibly proud of.
“While EG Group’s global focus evolves, it’s fantastic that our borough will firmly remain part of the EG On The Move story, with 300 people still working here and contributing to our local economy.”
When asked why UK operations were being moved to Bolton when the company already had a base in Blackburn, an EG Group spokesperson said: "As stated at our Q2 results on August 20, we are moving our European shared service centre from Blackburn to Bolton, Greater Manchester.
"This will enable us to recruit new and retain existing talented UK colleagues.”
The Lancashire Telegraph has on several occasions approached EG Group’s representatives with further questions, including how many jobs at the Waterside headquarters will be lost by the move to Charlotte and Bolton, how many jobs there will be at the Bolton office, and if staff currently working in Blackburn would retain their roles when UK operations move to Bolton.
They have declined to answer, and on Thursday, a spokesperson said: “We don’t have any comment on your questions.”
