Bridge It Housing has applied to Hyndburn Council to repurpose The Railway Hotel in Station Road, Huncoat.
The not-for-profit organisation dedicated to addressing needs wants to turn the building into a modern office and community hub, supporting local employment and social services.
Bridge It Housing will help to support the local community in providing housing needs by offering tailored support services and affordable housing solutions for vulnerable residents in Hyndburn.
The Railway Hotel is a two-storey traditional public house with a basement, located adjacent to Huncoat Railway Station.
Constructed in the late 19th century, the building features a brick façade with period architectural details and has a gross internal floor area of approximately 3,227 square feet (300 sqm).
The site includes a small rear yard, previously a beer garden, and is surrounded by mixed commercial and residential uses.
The building closed as a public house on March 22.
A supporting statement with the application says: “The ground floor will include open-plan office space, a reception, and two meeting rooms for community and client engagement.
“The first floor will provide additional office space, a staff room, and storage areas.
“The basement will be used for ancillary storage.
“Minor internal alterations, including partition walls and modern fixtures, are proposed, with no external changes to preserve the building’s appearance
“Bridge It Housing will help to support the local community in providing housing needs by offering tenancy support, homelessness prevention programs, and affordable housing options tailored to local demand.
“The office will serve as their administrative hub, employing 10 full-time staff and hosting workshops, training, and tenancy support programs in the meeting rooms.
“The Railway Hotel closed on March 22 due to financial losses, rising costs (e.g., utilities, staffing, business rates) and declining footfall, compounded by competition from modern pubs, rendered the business unsustainable.
“The property was marketed for sale as a public house from April 2020 to June 2022 by a local commercial estate agent and again in November 2024 by Whiteacres Estate Agents.”
