Hidden in Hoghton, this scenic spot receives attention for its waterfall walk, woodland trails and riverside views.
Described as a “hidden treasure”, Hoghton Bottoms offers visitors the chance to enjoy a peaceful walk along the River Darwen while discovering “beautiful waterfalls” and picnic spots along the way.
'Beautiful' Hoghton Bottoms waterfall walk
Visit Lancashire said: “Enjoy a woodland walk along the River Darwen.
“You will discover beautiful waterfalls as well as plenty of picnic spots.
“To find this hidden treasure, head towards Hoghton Village Hall, turn onto Chapel Lane.
“Park up and walk down to Long Barn Brow, passing to go right after Hoghton Barn.
“Following the path, you will reach the start of the trail.
“Please be mindful of the residents as this is a residential area.”
The Hoghton Bottoms walk is around 4.65 miles long and is described by Lancashire Walks as an easy route, suitable for families and dogs.
However, it is not accessible for pushchairs, and walkers are advised to wear Wellington boots or hiking boots due to boggy ground, especially after rainfall.
The walk starts at postcode PR5 0SL and typically takes between two and three hours to complete.
Lancashire Walks said: “Welcome to this waterfall walk that takes in some fantastic farmland and woodland above Riley Green, and then drops down into the River Darwen valley.
“You then get to experience the waterfalls and rapids at the Hoghton Bottom Weir.
“Please be aware that this walk can be very boggy after heavy rainfall so it is recommended that wellington boots or waterproof walking boots are worn on this walk.”

Hoghton Tower provides another option for a day out, while nearby canal cruises add to the appeal of the area.

“Good for short walks around Houghton Tower and the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
“Great food and excellent service.”

“The service was exceptional, though there was a slight delay when it came time to settle the bill.
“The food was nothing short of fantastic — 10/10, with great veggie options available as well.
“The only downside is that it’s on the pricier side, making it more of a special treat.
“Nevertheless, I’ll definitely be returning!”
