Drivers have been warned about scammers seeking to dupe them out of cash and personal details regarding an unpaid parking ticket.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has issued the alert after the text messages were sent to numerous residents.

In October, the council issued the same warning after receiving reports of mobile phone fraud from residents and police.

The scam tells the recipient that a fine needs to be paid in a short period of time and offers legitimacy through claims of receiving information from the DVLA.

A Blackburn with Darwen Council spokesperson said: “We've heard that parking text scams are doing the rounds again.

“The scammers send a text message to victims asking to pay a fine for a penalty charge notice (PCN) or face further action.

“If you get a text message such as this, don't be tempted to click on any links.

“You can forward any scam texts to 7726. Your provider can investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious.”

They have informed residents that anyone issued with a PCN will not be contacted by text.

The police's Regional Organised Crime Unit Network recently shared a warning urging drivers to take caution, following reports of the new scam crime being on the rise.
