East Lancashire’s premier golfing venue will play host to some of the country’s top Muslim golfers this week.
Pleasington Golf Club is hosting an event on the Muslim Golf Association’s Race to Makkah series.
The series pits players from around the UK against one another, all playing to earn a spot at the grand final event, which takes place at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club in King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia, 100 miles north of Makkah, the holiest site in Islam.
The visit of the MGA’s Race to Makkah series follows the completion of Pleasington’s five-year Good2Great programme, which has seen a full renovation and restoration of the golf course, as well as off-course changes to strengthen the club’s links to the town.
A key part of that was engaging the town’s Muslim community, with the club now home to a diverse and thriving membership.

At the event, taking place on Friday, June 27, more than 70 players will take to the course to test themselves against its rolling fairways, heathland surrounds and slick, undulating greens, all aiming to get a step closer to the final.
Amir Malik, founder and chief executive of the MGA, said: “This is a global tournament celebrating sport, community, and faith in one of Lancashire’s most scenic settings.
“This is more than just a tournament. It is a powerful representation of inclusion and cultural diversity in British sport.”
Along with the golf, which will tee off at 2pm in a shotgun start format, the club will also host Friday prayers.
Entry is still open for Muslim golfers who wish to take part, with an entry fee of £145 which includes the round, a bucket of balls on the driving range, a welcome breakfast sandwich and hot drink, and a dinner after the round. There are also multiple prizes available on the day.
The first two tournaments of the year took place at Whittington Heath Golf Club near Lichfield, and The Shire London Golf Club in Barnet. Further events are planned at the Forest of Arden Golf Club near Birmingham, and Brocket Hall Golf Club in Welwyn Garden City.
An event is also taking place at the iconic TPC Sawgrass in Florida, USA, in September.
