A woman is preparing to embark on a 4,000 mile walk to raise money for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP).

Ruth Herbert, 52, of South Cumbria, will be walking through 11 countries over six months, finishing her journey in Turkey.

She leaves her home in Arnside on Friday, May, 2, and on day three of her epic journey on Sunday, May, 4 will walk 18 miles from Longridge to Blackburn.

From Blackburn she will walk 15 miles to Rochdale, and then on Tuesday, May, 6 continues 11 miles into Central Manchester.

On Day 22 after roughly 350 miles she will arrive in Dover where she will take the ferry to France and begin the long walk through mainland Europe to Turkey.

She will be traversing some of the continents' most picturesque landscapes, from rolling hills to mountain passes and rugged coastlines on what says will be a 'deeply moving and exciting adventure' for a cause close to her heart.

The walk aims to support the Medical Aid For Palestinians (MAP).

Ruth said: “I have always believed in the power of perseverance, and this journey is my way of showing solidarity with the Palestinian people.

"The work of MAP is more important than ever at the moment, and I hope my efforts will help provide the support and resources needed to improve lives and deliver essential medical care.”

Israel’s military response to the October 7 attack has killed more than 51,000 Palestinians, many of them women and children as the siege of Gaza continues.

MAP aims to provide a future where all Palestinians can access an 'effective, sustainable and locally-led system of healthcare'. They have programmes in the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem, and Lebanon and work with trusted and experienced local partners to achieve this vision.
