New images have shown the extent of the wildfire that ripped through moorland near Haslingden on Thursday.

Firefighters were called to Musbury Tor, near Helmshore, at around 8.30pm on Thursday, April 10.

Crews from Rawtenstall and Bacup stations were called to the scene after the fire broke out.

Around 150 square metres of grassland was destroyed with images taken today revealing the extent of the blaze.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “Two fire engines from Haslingden and Bacup along with the drone team, wildfire units from Bacup and Rawtenstall with the Haagland and beaver tail specialist appliances all responded to a moorland fire on Tor Hill, Haslingden.

“The fire consisted of 150 square metres of scorched grassland which was extinguished using three aqualeader backpacks and three leaf blowers. Fire crews were on scene for thirty-five minutes.”

During the hot periods of spring and summer the fire service has warned of the heightened risk of wildfire.

A spokesperson said: “We've already attended several incidents over the past couple of weeks and we're urging everyone to take extra care when out enjoying the great outdoors.

“Let’s all play our part in protecting our beautiful county. Together, we can prevent wildfires from spreading and keep Lancashire safe.”

They have issued the following advice:

1. Please don’t smoke on the moors — but if you do, make sure your cigarette is fully out and disposed of safely. Never throw cigarette butts from your car window — it only takes a spark to start a wildfire.

2. Never bring a disposable BBQ onto the moors; instead, pack a picnic, it’s safer and just as tasty!

3. Always take your rubbish with you — glass bottles can catch the sunlight and start fires.

If you spot a fire, don’t wait — call 999 immediately. Your call could be vital.
