Search the Public Notice PortalNew plans have been unveiled for a padel centre in Blackburn, operated under the name of one of the UK’s most historic sports brands.
The new centre will be the latest addition to the padel scene in East Lancashire, as more opportunities to take part in the country’s fastest-growing sport open up.
Slazenger Padel Clubs has announced its site will open soon in Blackburn, located on Shadsworth Industrial Estate in Haslingden Road.
It will be the brand’s second dedicated padel centre after opening its first in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
The site will incorporate nine indoor padel courts, two pickleball courts, a fitness and warm-up area, changing rooms, a bar and pro shop, and ample parking spaces for players.
There will also be coaches on-site to help newcomers learn the game, or help those with experience take their game to the next level.
The clubs are run under the Slazenger name, which has been in operation since 1881 and focused primarily on tennis, cricket and hockey, but has since branched out into other racquet sports including padel.
A sport similar to tennis and squash, padel is played in doubles on a court slightly smaller than a tennis court surrounded by glass walls which the ball can be played off, and using solid bats rather than stringed racquets.
First played in Mexico in 1969, the sport has exploded in popularity in recent years in the UK, having previously been a sport mainly played in Spanish-speaking countries.
In East Lancashire, one court is already in operation at Blackburn Northern Sports Club in Pleckgate Road, and five indoor courts are open at Ribble Valley Tennis Centre in Edisford Road, Clitheroe.
A padel centre featuring five courts is set to open at Lomeshaye Industrial Estate in Brierfield, while plans for courts have been approved at Holcombe Brook Sports Club in Ramsbottom, and plans for four courts at Mytton Fold Hotel near Langho are being considered.
A blurb on the upcoming centre’s website reads: “At Slazenger Padel Clubs, we’re proud to continue the legacy of the iconic Slazenger brand, a symbol of sporting excellence since 1881.
“With over a century of experience, Slazenger has been at the forefront of delivering the highest quality equipment and facilities to athletes worldwide.
“Now, we’re bringing that same commitment to padel, offering world-class courts, expert coaching, and premium facilities.”
The opening was announced in mid-March, but no specific dates have been announced.
Frasers Group, the parent company of Slazenger Padel Clubs, has been approached for comment.
