Organisers of annual Iftar in Barnoldswick town square have thanked people for making it the 'biggest ever'.

The community gathering is organised by Barnoldswick Town Council in collaboration with the Usmania takeaway.

The iftar is the time of day when Muslims break their fast and the yearly event, which this year took place on Monday evening, attracts people of all faiths and backgrounds and is held in the town square.

Part owner and manager of the Usmania takeaway, Noor Uddin, said he was delighted with the response from the community.

“It went really well and it was good to see more people at the event. We think it was the biggest one yet.

“We would like to thank Barnoldswick Town Council for their help and support in putting this on for everyone.

“Thank you also to the local mosque and churches for attending, it is a great community event.

“It was a lovely gathering. It was great to see so many families.”

Guests were served everything from keema biryani to onion bhajis at sunset.

Noor added: “A big thank you to the team for cooking all the food. Six of us started cooking in the early afternoon.

"Some of the food was prepared the night before that helped.”

This year the iftar was attended by Scouts groups.

The 1st West Craven Scout Group said: “Thank you to Noor and all the team at Usmaniyah for organising the Community Iftar Event we all had a lovely evening.

"Thank you for your generosity and for teaching our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts about the traditions of Ramadan.”

Reverend Julie Bryan, minister of West Craven Baptist Church, added: "Thank you to Usmaniyah Takeaway for hosting another excellent community iftar.

"In giving and receiving food and hospitality, we were a reminder that mutual respect, goodwill and friendship are the way of peace, which is much needed in the world today."
