An egregious fly-tip has been spotted on the outskirts of Belthorn with a Hyndburn councillor insisting on the need for greater protections.
Conservative group leader Cllr Zak Khan captured the shocking images which showed a heap of black bin bags left at the side of the road.
Cllr Khan explained the area was a hot spot for fly-tipping and said the council would prosecute anyone they found to be involved in incidents.
He said: “There are plenty of words to describe people who fly tip.
"It is horrible and selfish, and these people have no care for the neighbours and the community, and we need to put them down and prosecute them.
“There are good people in our communities who go out every day on their own time and cost.
“It is demoralising for those people who keep doing that and they think they are fighting a losing battle, and I credit them for carrying on doing it regardless of how it feels.”
Despite receiving an additional £50,000 government grant for preventative measures and increased fines for fly-tippers, incidents in the area remain an ongoing problem throughout Hyndburn.
Recent incidents have been also reported in Great Harwood and Rishton.
Cllr Khan also raised the need for better systems to catch fly-tippers including more cameras in hotspots and greater pursuit of perpetrators.
Last year Hyndburn recorded 2,634 incidents of fly-tipping with 338 of these coming on footpaths and bridleways.
Of these, 1,299 were acted on by the council but only one resulted in a fixed penalty notice specifically for fly-tipping.
However, 24 fixed penalty notices were provided with some issued in conjunction with fly-tipping or for household duty of care.
One person, who commented on Cllr Khan’s post on Facebook, said: “Why don’t they go through the bags as there is bound to be someone’s name in all of that rubbish.
“This is obviously someone who doesn’t live in the village, jealous of the lovely village we live in.
“If I found a name or postcode I’m happy to get the van and dump it where they live.”
The incident occurred late on Saturday, January 18, or the early hours of Sunday, January 19.
