Tributes have been paid to one of East Lancashire's most gifted golfers following his sad death recently.
Trevor Foster was described as a ‘legend’ by Pleasington Golf Club, and died last month aged 64.
A highly skilled player, Trevor represented his home club Pleasington as well as Lancashire, England and Europe in golf as an amateur, picking up dozens of wins in the North West during his younger years and enjoying plenty of success as a senior.
From Oswaldtwistle, he worked for 40 years at Accrington Golf Club as a greenkeeper while also honing his craft on the course, qualifying for the 1988 Open Championship at Royal Lytham St Annes, won by Seve Ballesteros, which he led during the opening round.
That same year he also claimed a win in the Irish Seniors Amateur Open Championship, coming from five shots back on the final day to claim victory.
He also played in The Senior Open Championship, missing the cut in 2019 at Royal Lytham St Annes but going on to play the full four rounds at Sunningdale and Gleneagles in 2021 and 2022, respectively, taking the low-amateur prize in the latter.
“He was an incredible player for us, Lancashire Golf and England Golf and also represented Europe.
“A great man, Rest in Peace Trevor.”
The nation's amateur governing body, England Golf, said in a statement: “England Golf are devastated to hear of the passing of England Senior Men’s player, Trevor Foster.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
Trevor leaves his wife Debbie, two children Nikki and Ryan, and grandchildren.
