A 36-year-old man has been found guilty of carrying out a hammer attack on a man and a woman in Blackburn.

At lunchtime on Saturday, March 30, David Cairney attacked a man with a hammer inside a flat in Stonyhurst Road, close to the town centre.

When a woman went to help the victim, Cairney attacked her with the same hammer. Cairney then left with the male victim’s wallet and bank card.

Both victims suffered serious injuries which required hospital treatment.

Cairney was arrested on suspicion of serious assault later the same day. He was later charged with two counts of wounding and robbery.

Cairney, of no fixed address, was today found guilty on all counts by a jury at Preston Crown Court.

He was remanded into custody to be sentenced at the same court on 4 December.

DS Sian Hindle, of East Safeguarding, said: “David Cairney is an extremely violent man who carried out a sickening attack on two vulnerable victims.

“I want to place on record my thanks to all the officers who helped secure these convictions and the jury for their considered verdicts.

“This kind of violent behaviour will not be tolerated by Lancashire Police and we will do everything in our power to put the perpetrators before the courts.”
