The streets of Darwen came alive at the weekend, as the annual Darwen Valley Pram Race returned.
On September 14, participants gathered for the event, hosted in collaboration with Darwen-based support group Talk Ourselves Well and podcast The Lancashire Hot Pod.
This year's Pram Race, which sees participants decorate prams or pushcarts with elaborate and humorous themes and race them through the streets, saw teams dressed as a pack of crayons and even Little Britain characters Lou and Andy. It started at The Alexandra pub and finished at Sunbird Records.
As well as being a bit of fun for participants and onlookers, the event raised awareness for mental health and male suicide.
A Crowdfunder has been set up to raise money for charity. Talk Ourselves Well has been a steadfast advocate for mental health support in the community, providing valuable spaces for men to connect and converse.
Craig Kirkham, who helps to run Talk Ourselves Well, reflected on the day's success and said: “I think the day went really well.
“We only had three teams enter this year, but there were a lot of people who walked the route with the teams, with everyone in high spirits.
“We then went into our Unmute event which was electric from start to finish with a host of live acts and DJs who had donated their time to us lighting up the stage and keeping the vibe high throughout the night. Exhausting but definitely worth it.”
After the race, a music event was held at Sunbird Records in Darwen to fundraise for Talk Ourselves Well.
The evening saw DJs take to the stage including Gareth Coupe, Jordan Riding, Craig Kirkham, Si D, Parts, Polarity, DJ Other, Compo and Duggy B.
Craig said: “The Unmute event, held concurrently at Sunbird Records, was a lively continuation of the day's festivities. The venue was abuzz with energy as local DJs and live performers donated their talents, creating an electrifying atmosphere that complemented the afternoon's activities.
“Proceeds from the Pram Race and Unmute event will support Talk Ourselves Well's ongoing efforts. The funds will go towards covering the organisation’s running costs and will also help kick start the development of a community allotment, designed to serve as a valuable resource for local residents."
With a dedicated team and community backing, Talk Ourselves Well is committed to making a positive impact. “Everything raised goes back into the community,” Kirkham said, highlighting the importance of local support in fostering mental health initiatives.
