A care home has introduced novel new signs above doorways to support residents.
The project is part of a partnership between Hollymount Dementia Care Centre and Blackburn College.
The aim is to support those residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia who may it difficult finding their way around the building.
Care teams at the centre said after discussions with some of the residents it was decided that numbers were not be sufficient and a familiar area or road would be more beneficial to users.
The centre reached out to Blackburn College to see if the college and their students would like to support and share their own ideas.
A spokesperson for the care centre said: “We decided to choose road names in keeping with our surroundings, of being situated across from Corporation Park.
“The College suggested the design of the road signs not only to be clear but also in keeping with the traditional style of road signs.
"The college also, supported to provide consistent signage across the home. Including signage for communal areas such as our bar and games room, snug, lounge and dining room.”
Alongside more traditional dementia specific signage, the new signs have helped people find their way around the building.
The spokesperson added: “We are now discussing how to further to expand on the idea and success of this initiative.
“We are also so very thankful of the team and students at Blackburn College and everything they did out of the kindness of their hearts for our service users. From everyone at Hollymount Dementia Care Centre, we are forever grateful.”
