Roadworks on a busy Blackburn route were being cleared this weekend ahead of the return of the school run.
There have been long delays for drivers in both directions on Montague Street for the past month.
According to the one.network website the gas pipes work was due to finish at midnight on Saturday 17 August. But this was extended until Friday August 30.
This weekend the large hole taking up a large section of Montague Street had been filed and the surface relaid. Temporary traffic lights were still in place but these were due to be lifted.
The work has caused long delays for drivers, especially those joining the stretch from Barbara Castle Way.
A section of Feilden Street was also closed to traffic.
In the opposite direction, drivers heading into the road from King Street and Wainwright Way were also affected.
The closure of Blakey Moor, next to the Victoria Building, means drivers were unable to take shortcuts through the town centre.
Further works are due on Montague Street but this is not due to infringe upon the carriageway according to the one.network website which lists permits.
