This photo records one of the first public appearances in East Lancashire of a character which hundreds of school children would come to love.
Welephant was the new mascot of the fire brigade and was taking part in a fund-raising event for the Fire Brigade Benevolent Fund in King William Street, Blackburn, in 1987.
For the next few years, Welephant would be a regular visitor to schools to teach the message of fire safety and would regularly appear at fetes and carnivals.
